A mini-split heat pump (also called a ductless heat pump) is a highly efficient heating and cooling system that doesn’t require ductwork. Instead of using a central furnace and ducts, it has two main components:

● Outdoor unit – contains the compressor and coil.
● Indoor air handler(s) – mounted on a wall, ceiling, or floor inside the home.

Refrigerant lines and electrical wiring connect the indoor and outdoor units, making installation flexible and non-invasive.

How It Works

1. Heating Mode

  • The outdoor unit absorbs heat from the outside air (even in cold weather)e (Winter)
  • Refrigerant carries that heat indoors
  • The indoor air handler transfers the heat into the room using a fan

2. Cooling Mode

  • The process reverses
  • The indoor unit absorbs heat from inside the room
  • The heat is carried outdoors and released, cooling the indoor space

3. Zoned Comfort

  • Each indoor air handler controls the temperature in its own zone or room
  • Multiple indoor units can be connected to one outdoor unit, giving homeowners flexible and customizable comfort

2. Preparing for Installation
  • Select wall, ceiling, or floor placement for indoor air handlers
  • Plan the route for refrigerant lines, electrical wiring, and condensate drains
  • Prepare the outdoor area for the heat pump unit, usually on a small concrete pad or wall bracket
3. Installing the Indoor and Outdoor Units
  • Mount indoor air handler(s) securely in chosen rooms
  • Place the outdoor condenser unit with proper clearance for airflow
  • Drill a small opening through the wall to run refrigerant lines, wiring, and drainage between the units
4. Connecting the System
  • Install refrigerant line set and electrical connections between indoor and outdoor units
  • Seal openings to protect against weather and improve efficiency
  • Connect the condensate drain to safely carry moisture outdoors
6. Homeowner Walkthrough
  • Demonstrate how to use the remote or smart controls
  • Explain how to adjust settings for efficiency and comfort
  • Provide filter cleaning instructions and basic care tips
