A slim duct heat pump is a type of ducted mini-split system designed for homes or spaces where traditional full-size ductwork won’t fit. Instead of large ducts, slim duct systems use short, compact ducts to distribute air into one or multiple rooms. The indoor unit is usually hidden in a ceiling, attic, crawlspace, or closet, leaving only small vents visible.

How It Works

1. Outdoor Unit

  • Like all heat pumps, the slim duct system has an outdoor unit with a compressor and coil
  • Refrigerant lines run from the outdoor unit to the indoor slim duct air handler

2. Indoor Slim Duct Unit

  • The indoor unit is compact and installed out of sight (ceiling cavity, basement, or crawlspace)
  • A fan inside pulls air across a coil filled with refrigerant
  • In heating mode, the coil absorbs heat from refrigerant and warms the air
  • In cooling mode, the coil removes heat and humidity from the air

3. Air Distribution Through Small Ducts

  • Conditioned air is pushed through short, flexible ducts to supply vents in the room(s)
  • Return air is drawn back to the unit through a return vent, completing the cycle

4. Heating & Cooling Modes

  • Heating: The outdoor unit absorbs heat from the air outside, transfers it indoors, and the slim duct unit distributes it through the vents
  • Cooling: The process reverses, pulling heat out of the indoor air and releasing it outdoors
