How It Works

1. Cold Water Enters the Tank

  • Fresh cold water flows into the tank through a dip tube that sends it to the bottom.

2. Heating the Water

  • Gas models use a burner at the bottom of the tank
  • Electric models use heating elements inside the tank
  • A thermostat monitors the water temperature and signals the heater to turn on or off as needed

3. Storage & Insulation

  • The tank is insulated to keep the water hot until it's needed
  • The heater cycles on and off throughout the day to maintain the set temperature, usually around 120°F

4. Hot Water Delivery

  • When you turn on a hot water tap, the hot water exits from the top of the tank
  • At the same time, cold water enters from the bottom to replace what's used, keeping the cycle going

5. Safety Features

  • A temperature and pressure relief valve prevents the tank from overheating or building excess pressure
  • An anode rod inside helps reduce corrosion and extend the life of the tank

5. Thermostat & Controls

  • Verify that the thermostat is accurate and set to a safe temperature (usually 120°F).

6. For Tankless Units

  • Flush the heat exchanger with a descaling solution to remove mineral buildup.
  • Clean the inlet filter and inspect sensors.

7. System Testing

  • Run the heater to ensure consistent hot water
  • Check efficiency, safety features, and performance
