EV Charger Installation

Fast, safe, and efficient charging for your electric vehicle at home or business

What is an EV Charger?

An EV charger (electric vehicle charger) is a device that supplies power to recharge the battery of an electric vehicle (EV). While EVs can technically plug into a standard wall outlet, dedicated EV chargers provide faster, safer, and more efficient charging.

1. Power Supply

The charger connects to your home or business’s electrical panel. Depending on the type, it uses either standard household power (120V) or higher-capacity circuits (240V or more).

2. Conversion & Delivery

The charger delivers electricity to your EV’s onboard charging system. The vehicle itself manages charging speed and battery protection.

3. Charging Process

Level 1 (120V): Uses a standard outlet, adds ~5-8 km of range per hour

Level 2 (240V): Dedicated EV charger, adds ~30-45 km of range per hour — ideal for homes and workplaces

DC Fast Charging: Public stations, adds up to 250+ km of range in about 30 minutes

Types of EV Chargers for Homes & Businesses

Level 1 Charger (Basic)

Plugs into a regular wall outlet, no installation needed, but very slow.

Level 2 Charger

Requires a 240V outlet or hardwired connection, installed by a licensed electrician.

Commercial & Fleet Chargers

Higher-capacity units designed for businesses, condos, or parking facilities.

How to Get an EV Charger Installed

Check Electrical Capacity

Most homes in BC require a 200-amp service panel to support an EV charger, especially if you already use a heat pump or other high-demand appliances. If your panel is too small, an electrical service upgrade may be required.

Choose a Charger

Select a Level 2 charger from trusted brands (such as FLO, ChargePoint, Tesla, JuiceBox). Look for ENERGY STAR® certified models for efficiency.

Hire a Licensed Electrician

A qualified electrician installs the charger, runs wiring, and ensures it meets BC Electrical Code and BC Hydro requirements. They will also handle permits and inspection.

Rebates & Incentives

In BC, rebates are often available through CleanBC and BC Hydro for home and workplace EV charger installations. Single-family homeowners may receive up to $350 per Level 2 charger, while multi-unit buildings and workplaces may qualify for higher rebates.

Inspection & Activation

Once installed, the system is inspected by the city or authority having jurisdiction. The charger is then activated and ready for daily use.
